First and foremost, and especially if you are prone to being under the weather, you should always have your medical information handy; consider it as important as your passport when traveling. Within your medical information, be sure to have all of your doctors’ phone numbers, as well as any prescriptions you currently have, and the phone number of your pharmacy. You should also make sure you have traveler’s health insurance, not only if you are prone to illness, but also if you have young children.
Make sure you pack any medications that you are currently taking. It would be best to place them in your carry-on, so that they are readily accessible. Also, if your check-in luggage doesn’t make it to your destination, you will have them on you. However, there may be limits in regards to how much medication you can travel with on your person, so be sure you have your prescriptions handy in order to prove the reason why you need them.
If you are staying in a hotel while abroad and you do start feeling symptoms of being sick, call the concierge to see if they can suggest a local doctor that you may see. If the illness does seem serious enough to have to go see a doctor, do so with the buddy system. When you’re sick, you should avoid being alone if you are away from a bed, as you never know what new symptom can come about. In a lot of countries, you can also just go to a local pharmacy and describe your symptoms. If you don’t speak the language, try to look up the words for your symptoms. Worst-case scenario, simply point to the part of your body that is bothering you, and mime it out! You’d be surprised by the over-the-counter medications available in pharmacies around the world. If you happen to get food poisoning, it is highly suggested to stay at your accommodation and rest. Although it is a bummer that you won’t be able to see the sights, you don’t want to further complicate your condition.
If you do get sick abroad, no matter what it is, remember to drink a lot of water, get yourself some dry foods and tea, and just try to get as much rest as possible.
