With its idyllic sandy beaches and abundance of natural beauty, St. Lucia is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or relaxing vacation. St. Lucia is unique in that the north and the south parts of the islands are so different that each area feels like a different island in itself. For this reason, St. Lucia is often seen as a ‘two-in-one’ island!
The north part of the island is a very popular vacation destination as it is home to the capital city, Castries and most of the islands resorts. The north also boasts glorious golden beaches that stretch for miles along with Pigeon Island National Park and Marigot Bay, both beautiful places to wander around. Reduit Beach is the best place on the island for snorkelling, windsurfing or just peacefully watching the sunset, and is walking distance from most of the main resorts. There are also plenty of brilliant restaurants, such as The Coal Pot in Castries, a tiny waterfront restaurant overlooking the stunning Vigie Cove. The Cliff at Cap restaurants also has beautiful views from its cliff-top location, which during the day stretch as far as the island of Martinique.
The southern part of St. Lucia is less developed than the north and here is where you can delve into the island’s natural beauty. Near Soufrière, St. Lucia’s oldest town and former colonial capital, you’ll find the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens and Mineral Baths. Here you can stroll amongst the exotic flowers and take a dip in the outdoor pools. The South is also home to St. Lucia’s most iconic attractions: the Pitons. These are two mountainous volcanic plugs that stand out dramatically on St. Lucia’s picturesque coast. The Sulphur Springs or Soufrière volcano is also a must-see as it is the only ‘drive-in’ volcano in the world! Follow the road right through the volcano’s crater and watch the boiling mud and water bubble just metres away. You can also bathe in the hot springs, which, due to the volcanic minerals, are said to be therapeutic for the skin. However, you will have to brave the pungent sulphur smell of the water!
Although more rural than the north, the south has many lovely restaurants, such as Dasheene at Ladera which has an incredible close-up view of the Pitons, and friendly and casual atmosphere and delicious Caribbean food. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset and congratulate yourself on choosing such a breathtakingly beautiful vacation destination!
